Anyone can hit a downer and it can be challenging to rise up into the sky when you’ve hit bottom. Yet, some people have a brilliant mechanism for over-coming incidents that block them from becoming what they want, from doing what they wish.
There are a few steps that I think are vital for overcoming yourself – it’s usually not the situation you’re in that’s the issue, it’s you.
So how do YOU do it?
- Understand that you are ultimately responsible for how you feel – not something OUT there.
- Accept yourself for who you are
- Treat yourself
- Note down all the things you are good at: if you can’t think of anything, think of all the good things that have ever happened to you
- Be grateful
- Look into yourself: find what irritates you, triggers negativity. Avoid.
- Look into yourself: find what inspires you, keeps you focused. Revisit regularly.
- Surround yourself with positive things and people
- Understand that everything comes in cycles: rain follows sunshine. There will be moments when you feel down, but the good times will return!
- Accept kindness from others
Remember that you are what you think!
Now, if you’re in an extreme situation – for instance an abusive relationship, the above advice may not be enough. In that instance:
- Get advice
- If your life is in danger you need help. Ask for it.
- If you life isn’t in danger (physically), know this: all bullies crumble before someone who sticks up for themselves
- If you can walk away, walk away
- If you can’t walk away go to number 1 – ask advice
Staying positive is something that anyone can learn. You just have to take the first step: responsibility.
